Need to swap a tube and not sure what fits? This chart covers the guitar amp tubes we get asked about most: which ones are the same tube under a different name, which ones swap with a change in gain or feel, and which ones look close but should never go in the same socket.
Short version: a tube with the same pinout and heater voltage will usually fit. Whether it should go in depends on your amp's circuit, its power transformer and its bias. When in doubt, check your amp's manual or ask your amp tech before you swap power tubes or rectifiers.
Preamp tube substitution chart (9-pin)
All of these share the standard 9-pin dual-triode pinout used by the 12AX7, so they physically drop into a 12AX7 socket. The difference is gain (amplification factor, or "mu"). Going down the list gives you more clean headroom and less distortion.
| Tube | Also sold as | Gain (mu) | In a 12AX7 socket |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12AX7 | ECC83, 7025, 12AX7A, 12AX7WA/WB/WC, E83CC, CV4004, B759 | ~100 (highest) | Same tube. Swap freely. |
| 5751 | — | ~70 | Drops in. About 30% less gain, a little smoother. |
| 12AT7 | ECC81, 6201 | ~60 | Drops in. Less gain, more headroom. Standard in many reverb drivers and phase inverters. |
| 12AY7 | 6072 | ~44 | Drops in. Big jump in clean headroom. Original V1 tube in the Fender 5E3 Deluxe. |
| 12AU7 | ECC82, 5814, 6189 | ~20 | Drops in. Very little gain. Mostly used as a driver or buffer. |
| 12DW7 | ECC832, 7247 | ~100 / ~20 | Drops in. One half acts like a 12AX7, the other like a 12AU7. Only use it where the circuit calls for it. |
Preamp tubes that are NOT 12AX7 substitutes
- ECC88 / E88CC / 6922 / 6DJ8 — 6.3V-only heater on different pins and a different internal layout. Not a drop-in for a 12AX7.
- EF86 / 6267 — a pentode with its own pinout. Only goes in amps built for it (several Vox and Matchless-style designs).
- 12BH7 — same pinout, but it's a high-current driver tube (used in amps like the Ampeg SVT). It won't behave like a 12AX7 in a normal preamp stage.
Which position to swap first
V1 (the first preamp tube, usually closest to the input jack) has the biggest effect on gain and noise. Dropping a 12AT7 or 12AY7 into V1 is the easiest way to get more clean headroom out of an amp that breaks up too early. Leave the phase inverter alone unless you know what it was designed for, since it sets how hard the power tubes are driven.
Power tube substitution chart (octal)
Power tubes are where swaps get serious. Even tubes with the same name can draw different heater current or need a different bias. Any power tube change in a fixed-bias amp means a bias check.
| Swap | OK? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 6L6GC ↔ 5881 | Yes | The 5881 is a tougher, slightly lower-rated version of the 6L6. A 6L6GC is usually fine in a 5881 amp and the other way round. Rebias. |
| EL34 ↔ 6CA7 | Yes | 6CA7 is the American name for the EL34. Rebias. |
| EL34 → KT77 | Yes | The KT77 drops into EL34 sockets. Tighter lows and a bit more headroom. Rebias. |
| 6550 ↔ KT88 | Usually | Same heater current and pinout. Common swap in amps built for 6550s (like the Ampeg SVT). Rebias. |
| 6L6GC → KT66 | Often | Fits most 6L6 amps but draws more heater current (about 1.3A vs 0.9A) and is physically bigger. Check your power transformer and cabinet clearance. Rebias. |
| EL84 ↔ 6BQ5 ↔ 7189 | Yes | Same tube family. The 7189 is rated for higher plate voltage. |
| 6L6 ↔ EL34 | Only if the amp is built for it | Different pin 1 wiring, different heater current (EL34 about 1.5A vs 6L6GC about 0.9A) and a different bias point. Some amps have a switch or are designed for both (several Mesa/Boogie models). Never swap these in an amp that isn't. |
| 6V6 → 6L6 | Only if the amp is rated for it | A 6L6 draws about double the heater current of a 6V6 and can overload a small 6V6 power transformer. |

Rectifier tube substitution chart
Rectifiers set how much voltage reaches the rest of the amp, and how much it sags when you dig in.
| Tube | Voltage drop | Feel | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5AR4 / GZ34 | Lowest | Tight, punchy, least sag | Slow warm-up, easy on the power tubes at startup. |
| 5U4GB | Medium | Some sag | Draws more heater current (about 3A) than a 5Y3 or 5AR4. Check your power transformer first. |
| 5Y3 | Highest | Loose, spongy, most sag | Classic tweed feel. |
| EZ81 / 6CA4 | — | — | 9-pin. Does not swap with any of the octal rectifiers above. |
Heads up: putting a 5AR4 into an amp built for a 5Y3 raises the voltage on everything after it. More headroom and punch, but also more stress on the power tubes and filter caps. Recheck the bias after any rectifier swap. More in our 5AR4 / GZ34 guide.
Rules before you swap
- Same pinout, same heater voltage. If either is different, it doesn't go in the socket.
- Check heater current on power tubes and rectifiers. Your power transformer has to supply it.
- Rebias fixed-bias amps after any power tube change. Cathode-biased amps (most EL84 combos, many 6V6 amps) adjust themselves.
- Replace power tubes as a matched set. Mixing an old tube with a new one throws the pair out of balance. Every power tube set we ship is matched.
- Turn the amp off and let tubes cool before pulling them. Never open the chassis yourself: filter caps hold lethal voltage even when the amp is unplugged.
FAQ
Is a 7025 the same as a 12AX7?
Yes. The 7025 was originally a low-noise, low-microphonic version of the 12AX7. Today the names are used interchangeably and any 7025 works in a 12AX7 socket.
Is ECC83 the same as 12AX7?
Yes. ECC83 is the European designation for the same tube. Same pinout, same gain.
Can I put a 12AT7 in place of a 12AX7?
Yes. It drops right in and gives you less gain and more clean headroom. It's a common V1 swap for a cleaner amp at higher volume.
Can I use EL34s in my 6L6 amp?
Only if the amp was designed for both. The two tubes are wired differently on pin 1, draw different heater current and need a different bias. Check the manual or ask your amp tech.
Do I need to rebias after swapping preamp tubes?
No. Bias only applies to power tubes. Preamp tubes can be swapped without any adjustment.
